In this section of the Material page are all the color palettes that I have ripped myself from in-game sprites… these can be very useful for pixel artists and spriters who can’t come up with dynamic colors yet, don’t feel like making their own gradients, or are just simply looking to try new colors for their pieces.
This zip file contains both .act files (charamaker1999) and .pal files (graphicsgale)… that way it’s compatible for import with any program that supports these formats. This file will be updated as I keep ripping new palettes from games. The zip file won’t include the color palette as images, instead they will be shown below. If you post these palettes I ripped myself somewhere else, link back to this page, that’ll be great.

Have a problem using other palettes other than your own? let’s hear what the Proffesional Pixel Artists from Pixeljoint have to say about your mentality in the following link:
http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8354
That’s right, there is no such thing as color copyright haha… if you want to give me credit for spending hours collecting and converting these colors into images it’s up to you, just as it’s up to you to give the credits saying from which game the colors came from… with that said, have fun coloring!

You need to learn how to make palette tables instead of linear palettes, especially as a spriter.
Learn how to combine hues and colors to allow for much more possibilities. Using palettes built into little lines adds to color counts and really chops up the piece.
I know how to combine hues and all that… and I have my own palette table but I won’t share that anywhere. And the palettes are made into lines like that to keep an easy and practical way for people to use them. I’m pretty sure that people can color anything with the colors in any of those palettes.
Here’s an example of abysswolf using a palette of similar style to the ones shared here, and watch what he comes up with in the end…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BhA24pN8eE
…so well, it’s pretty possible as you can see.
I don’t mean a table like that. I mean something like this:
http://i31.tinypic.com/2qlzcpz.png
(I was working with your last palette, but my computer started to uber lag as I was working so just saved what I had done so far.)
See how I lined up your lines? This shows how many colors up there are so close to each other, meaning that you could easily replace all of the slight variants with one universal color. That’s the REAL key to pixel art, as I’m sure you know color count should be kept as low as possible.
And, I never said linear palettes weren’t unusable. Some of the greatest pieces could have used a linear palette.
I’m just saying that adapting to color tables can really help you in the professional spriting world.
Also, it makes palette creation much more fun. You get to come up with a lot of new and exciting ways to combine colors. ;D
And, let me also add that the finished sprite from that video can have it’s color palette updated and reduced by 7 colors:
http://i28.tinypic.com/2n0u6m8.png
And, in any sprite, that’s substantial.
Ahhh I see what you mean now. I was basically just extracting the colors according to each individual sprite, etc… the idea of making it different as you commented, sounds more reasonable.
For the ripped colors, I will collect the palettes and organize them the same way (since I use the charamaker1999 it’s a lot easier to just store them lined up from left to right), but I’m going to make an actual color table, and it will feature colors from me created by messing with the RBG numbers…. *thumbs up*
And well I agree with the part of “decreasing color count”… specially if you participate in weekly contests from pixeljoint where almost always is enforced.
Thanks for the picture examples, they always help.
Glad I could help!
Eh, PixelJoint. I don’t go on their too much. Seem like a bunch of pixel-elitists to me. But that’s just my opinion, I suppose. :3
Haha damn… I actually thought you found my site from the link I dropped in pixeljoint, since I shared the .zip with the palettes in there too. Haha I haven’t really noticed the elitism there, but I guess everywhere you find few people like that… mostly in some rpgmaker communities lol, it’s more obvious.
Do you have a portfolio? I would like to check your works.
That’s actually exactly where I found it. XD
I do like perusing their gallery, though. I just never go to the forums or look at comments/descriptions anymore…
Nope, I don’t. I’ve only really done a bit of “professional” stuff here and there. I do a lot more coding that I do pixeling. ; _;
I learned most of what I know now about pixeling from my work on Maple Story and a few avatar sites. Ya’ know, working with all those pixel images lets info seep into your brain. XD
haha holy crap you did the sprites for Maple Story? I never played the game (I know about it though since it’s famous) but I have deffinitely looked at the sprite work from the game… I study and observe a lot of sprites, maple story sprites are worth taking a look at. If you did those, the ones for the monsters and such, very well done job.
I also check a lot the gallery in pixeljoint… I’ve been remaining active, since I’m more into pixel art now than messing with rpgmaker stuff haha… so yeah, I’m mostly in those pixel sites and well updating here and adding stuff to my DA.
By the way, I have more color palettes coming up this week… for now like I said before I’ll just start collecting them, but I’ll see if I can deffinitely make a color table with the best colors from some of them. XD
Oh no no no no no, I didn’t make any of the images there. XD
I just coded bits and pieces of the system, mostly involving actually placing the sprites in the game. So I was working with the sprites and stuff the artists had made for quite a while, and I often looked at them and studied the technique. Helped me understand quite a bit. :3
Ohhh I see. I thought that was your pixel art (as in main occupation for the project) since you mentioned it in the part where you said you worked for proffesional games haha… either way cool.
And yeah I agree… while in many cases observation can be boring, it helps a lot. I am curious… how you managed to grab that sprite of shanoa? the one on the video… I don’t remember seeing that in the card gallery yet haha… I mean as in .gif or .png image… I only seen that shanoa from the video process.
Lulz, I wish.
If you go to the video and click “More Info” on the description thing, you’ll see a link there to an image of the finished sprite. :3
I see… he probably updated it, cause I remember reading about it and not seeing that link there.

in response to Zen’s comment on aug/5/09 about what he thinks the tables should look like:
Although I think this is a correct way to use them, I feel as if they were premade like that it leaves less to the imagination of the person using them. And more repetiveness in results of those who use them.
Any chance you can make a palette for Capcom vs. SNK 1 and/or 2?
I will have to get the sprites from the game so I can extract it and such… I’ll see if I can find them.

Thanks, I’ll put some time into it to make the palette… by the end of this month or the beginning of february, it’ll get done… actually, let’s leave it for february, so I can add 4 more palettes.
